Master and sexton of the Gray Demesne, the Graveyard. Known as Thanatos the Grieving King, believing in ceremony. Holder of the Grimm Requiem.

History:

Thanatos Ondogon is the personified concept of death and the END. His demesne is an endless graveyard of hand-carved headstones shrouded in gray mist, expanding outward from its single path as new graves are added, with the oldest belonging to the French criminal poet Francois Villon. He lives alone in the mausoleum the gate is attached to, keeps fresh flowers on every recent grave, and blesses each with “shantim gacchhe.” He values the life and memory of everyone who ever came.

He held Warton Tarbh’s funeral in his cathedral, playing piano to steady Peyton through the eulogy. Through his palm he can grant others the sight of emotions as colored auras and the spirits of the dead as gray figures, and one of the Kings of Kings resonated strongly enough to keep the gift as the Eyes of Eternity. When Marauders tried to crash the funeral, he quietly stepped outside, wrapped them in a wall of fog, and drove them off screaming without the mourners hearing a thing. He declined the Kings of Kings’ challenge that day, refusing to fight in front of grieving mortals.

He later hosted Rowena’s small funeral, with Caelum singing, and accepted the Kings of Kings’ challenge in his cathedral, his spirits clearing the pews for battle while he fought with a scythe crowned with a golden wolf skull and a wolf skull mask. In the epilogue, Caelum’s brother Charon, a cerberus, joined him in running the cemetery.

Notes:

  • Messy silver hair, dull emerald green eyes.
  • Speaks with a soft Tamil accent (T as D, P as B).
  • Sees emotions as colors: gray is grief, and the departed feel the most of it.
  • Spirits of the dead help him around the cathedral, visible only to those with his sight.
  • Fulmo’s maid Naina contacts him to arrange services after Fulmo’s challenges.
